My
dad Noel F. Halbert while in the army during World War II Dad is
about age 20 here. He was Inducted into the army 2 December 1942, at Jefferson
Barracks, Missouri, and entered Active Service 8 December 1942, on the 1st
anniversary of the U.S. declaration of war on Germany. He was sent overseas
to England 13 September 1943, and participated in the invasion of Normandy
(D-Day 6 June 1944). He landed at Utah Beach 2 to 6 days after D-Day
and was assigned to the 691st Ordinance Ammunition Company, which was attached
to the 1st Army. He participated in several battles and campaigns: Normandy,
Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), and Central
Europe. He was awarded 5 bronze stars for the above mentioned campaigns,
plus the Good Conduct Medal. He arrived back in the States 31 October 1945,
as a Private First Class. He was in the service 7 months, 7 days, and 2
years, with 2 years 1 month and 27 days being served overseas.
