TIP 1:
Save paths and/or selections, they require little memory and can be very useful later. Also by saving a selection to a new channel, it can be modified in the channels palette.

The 4x5 reference photo was enlarged to 8x10 and scanned into Photoshop, gray scale mode at 600ppi, using a Microtex ScanMaker E6 scanner. Also scanned a stock photo of another face at the correct size to fit on model, same resolution (600ppi). Drew a selection around the face scan with the lasso tool, inverted the selection, named the background layer and deleted the background. Replaced my friend's face with the stock photo face using the move tool, (it will be on a new layer when you do this) and adjusted the position until it looked right. Closed the scan of the face without saving. Adjusted the levels on the face to roughly match the body, further corrected the values of the neck with the dodge and burn tools. On a new layer, the hair was styled using the brush tool with different shades of gray. No PhotoShop tricks here, just plain old drawing skills. Used the pen tool to draw a path around the figure, selected the path and saved the selection, it will be useful later. Feathered the selection by 2 pixels, inverted the selection, and filled the background with white. The mouthpiece of the headset was cut and pasted to a new layer. This had to be a separate piece of art for the video work. For now it's safely hidden, and I will make a separate file for it later.
