Rough 3 was chosen as the basic idea to work with. Now I needed to do a detailed pencil of the cover, for client approval and for me to use on the finished illustration. The garlic rope will be the main focus of the illustration, so it is important that it is accurately drawn. To get good reference, a garlic rope is purchased from a kitchen supply store and photographed. The garlic rope is set up and photographed with a 4x5 view camera, using a Polaroid back and black and white film. I lighted the garlic to give the effect of a sunrise, light coming from the horizon and from the center. I'm not worried about the clutter in the photo, since the garlic is the only thing being drawn. This print is placed in an overhead projector (lucy) and a lose pencil outline is drawn on tracing paper. I placed another piece of tracing paper over the lose pencil and made a tighter sketch, adjusting proportions and making it more graceful.
