LINE: The bread is drawn as a separate scratchboard illustration. The client sent me several samples of the bread, so I was able to set the bread up and take a good reference photo. Although the reference photo was good, I made several changes to it while doing the pencil. The piece was scanned at 300 ppi and 100 percent in line art mode, using my scanner. I use the same process as described in "step 2" (make line work with transparent white, switching to CMYK, etc.), to add color to the bread. COLOR: The color is mostly browns with hotter, lighter, yellow and yellow browns where the light from the sunrise is hitting. The modeling is already done with the line work, all that has to be done with the colors, is to pick the right ones. A good rule of thumb when adding color to a line drawing, is to keep the color values at about 25 percent, any darker and you may begin to lose the contrast in the line art. The bread is ready to be placed in the border. View detail
