  Inking Scratchboard

TIP:
Press lightly with your free hand against your drawing hand, this will help steady the pen and give you more control.

The pencil is transferred to a piece of white Essdee scratchboard, which is glued to a piece of 1/8 inch foam core. Now I'm almost ready to start inking. But first I have to get comfortable, so I turn on the TV, maybe Oprah or Jerry Springer, then I find every available piece of reference and spread it out in front of me. I'll pickup details from different pieces of the reference as I work. I place a clean sheet of tracing paper between my hand and the board, this keeps the board clean and free from body moisture and oils. Let the inking begin!

MATERIALS:
I use Koh-i-noor technical pens, .000 to 4, .00 and .000 for detail and 2 to 4 for filling in dark areas. An X-acto knife and scratchboard knives are used to scratch white lines into black areas and to cleanup line work. A kneaded eraser is used to wipe off the pencil transfer and any other smudges or dirt that may accumulate.
