On the left is a digital photo showing the
inked face of the Spanish soldier. My digital camera doesn't do a good
job with line art, but it should be good enough to give you an idea of
how the illustration
progressed.
I have basically two different ways of doing the scratchboard rendering.
For this illustration I finished one small section at a time. On some
illustrations: I outline the whole drawing; then fill in with solid black
for the darkest areas; then put in parallel pen lines for mid tones; and
then finish by making the lines thick and thin.
Finishing one small area at a time gives a more instant gratification,
and building the entire illustration up together requires more patients.
I believe building the entire illustration up together is the best method,
but sometimes the more instant gratification technique gives me an added
boost of motivation.
