Portrait of Spanish Soldier

On the left is a digital photo showing the inked face of the Spanish soldier. My digital camera doesn't do a good job with line art, but it should be good enough to give you an idea of how the illustration progressed.

I have basically two different ways of doing the scratchboard rendering. For this illustration I finished one small section at a time. On some illustrations: I outline the whole drawing; then fill in with solid black for the darkest areas; then put in parallel pen lines for mid tones; and then finish by making the lines thick and thin.

Finishing one small area at a time gives a more instant gratification, and building the entire illustration up together requires more patients. I believe building the entire illustration up together is the best method, but sometimes the more instant gratification technique gives me an added boost of motivation.
