I have my son pose for Hercules. The apple is the light source in the sketch, so the model is lit to match that light source. A thin beard and more hair are added to the digital photo of my son, using PhotoShop. See the photo before retouching.

Tip:
It is usually best to use black and white photos for reference when the reference is being used to do black and white art.
