The primary purpose of this rough sketch
is to work out the historical accuracy of the clothing, and to arrive
at a suitable pose and personality for the figure.
The sketch
is drawn on tracing paper, which is placed over the reference photo.
The photo acts as a rough guide for the figures anatomy, but the clothing
has to be drawn from reference material provided by the client. After
the sketch is completed it is emailed to the curator of the museum so
he can check the historical accuracy of the clothing, and to the designer
so he can approve the pose and overall look of the dude.
Accuracy of the figure's anatomy is not important at this stage, but the
clothing needs to be accurate enough for the curator to make suggestions.
I was planning at this stage to give the gambler a potbelly, but decided
later to make him more macho.
