Here is the completed pencil that will be
used to do the final scratchboard illustration. Notice that this pencil
doesn't have as much shading as the rough pencil sketch from the previous
step. There is not as much shading in this pencil because; I knew there
was likely to be further changes, and it is much easier to change an outline
drawing than a shaded drawing; this pencil will be transferred to the
scratchboard, and the fewer graphite lines transferred to the clay surface
the better (graphite is difficult to remove from the clay surface); an
outline drawing can be done faster and time was getting short; finally,
an outline drawing can be drawn more accurately and makes a better guide
for doing the final inking.
Notes about the clothing and texture to the tie and vest were added to
the pencil with PhotoShop before emailing the pencil to the client for
their approval.
I sometimes work on sections
of a drawing, and then add those sections to the final pencil.
