After the Detailed pencil is approved it
is transfered to a piece of scratchboard. The pencil sketch which is transfered
to the board acts as a roadmap when doing the inking.
I begin the inking for this illustration by outlining the entire figure
with ink. After the figure is entirely outlined with ink there is no further
need for the light pencil lines, so they are removed with a kneeded eraser.
With the pencil lines removed, I then fill in the darkest areas with solid
black ink.
Tip:
Erase the pencil lines after doing a simple (thin lines) ink outline of
the entire drawing. Erasing the pencil lines will also remove some of
the ink from the inked lines, so it is best to do any erasing early. Most
of the inked outline will be scratched away, so it does not matter if
those lines are effected somewhat by erasing. Do not wait until the ink
rendering is finished before erasing the pencil lines.
See digital photos of the basic stages
of the rendering.
