The PDF of the
ad was placed in Illustrator. Then everything (type, logos, stuff) was
deleted, except for the comp of the house and tape measure. The sketch
of the house was then scaled up to about 2.5 times larger than the final
print size and then made into a template dimmed to about 60 percent. Even
though this is being done on the computer, I still work 2 to 3 time larger
than the final print size because I always want the option of being able
to print the image out on a piece of scratchboard, and finishing by hand
if needed. This illustration ended up being drawn completely in the computer,
but many times only part of the illustration can be handled with the computer.
In that case, it is printed out at that stage on to a piece of scratchboard,
and finished just like a regular scratchboard illustration.
Be warned though, running scratchboard through a printer could void the
warranty (scratchboard has a thin clay coating which could come of in
the printer).
