This was going to be a difficult sketch
to do. I would have to create a unique monster (how do you catch a unique
monster?. . . You neak up on it.), plus draw it in a difficult perspectiveI
needed some good reference.
The first thing I tried was photographing a toy monster. It seemed like
a good idea, but it just didn't work.
Then I used a 3D program that had a library of generic people already
built, picked a male figure and distorted it to match the shape needed
for the monster (well...kinda'). Then I picked a camera lens and camera
angle that would give the dramatic perspective represented in the layout.
The 3D model was then rendered at the size that the final pencil would
be drawn, then it was printed.
This helped a lot, but most of the sketch was drawn from a mental picture
that I had of the monster.
