Color For Scratchboard

The image is converted to RGB and color is added to layers under the line art (the line art has all the white pixels removed, similar to the line art being on a piece of clear acetate).

The key to adding color to line art is to keep the colors light and bright. When the colors are viewed through the black lines, they will be darkened and muted when the eye mixes the black lines and color together.

Filters were used to give the type an embossed look.

A biscuit was scanned and used as the texture in the lower shield. The texture was toned way down, because type was going over it and it needed to be easy to read. Remember, the art is being used to teach children to read better—not to find hidden words in a picture.
