Imagine this. . . An image is in Bitmap mode, but then it's converted to Grayscale mode. Now it has shades of gray in it, they're small, but they're there.

An image of a wave, done in an engraving style, is scanned from a "Dover" book (Dover publishes copy right free images of old engravings). The "wave" scan will be added to the image of the Sailor.

The Canvas Size of the "sailor" image was increased by adding onto the right side (Background color is white), where the "wave" image will be placed. Then the "wave" is dragged into the "sailor" image with the Move tool. This places the wave on a layer above the sailor. The wave is positioned and trimmed to fit.

A graphics pen was used to clean up the line work in the wave art.
