Detail has been
added to the image by painting on the Background with the dodge and
burn tools. The clutter behind the figure was removed by painting on a new
layer at the top of the Layers palette, using the pencil tool with black
and white colors.

The image has
been cleaned up and stylized. At this point the image was flattened and
is still in Grayscale mode. This
could be used as a small icon, even at this stage. |

Apply the Gaussian Blur filter to the Background.
Gaussian Blur helps smooth out the lines. A Radius of about 3 pixels was
used on this image.
Add a new layer to the top of the Layers Palette and give it a name; I
named mine "CleanUpLines." Use this layer to paint out the background
clutter and to cleanup the black shapes, adding detail and outlines as
needed.
Once I am satisfied that the image has a clean, bold, graphic, realistic
look, I flatten it. You don't have to flatten it, but I'm a trill seeker,
so I flatten it-there's no going back now.
Tip: Simplify the black shapes by rounding off corners, and removing
small details, such as specks of black and white, or the speckeled texture
around the edges of the bold black shapes. Simplifying the lines will
give the final icon a graphic, stylized look.
Tip: Temporarily turn the visibility of the Threshold Adjustment
layer off to see what the original Grayscale images looks like.
